As Halloween approaches us – here is an easy and quick recipe for your fur baby to enjoy some homemade pumpkin treats!
Homemade Pumpkin Dog Treats
Pumpkin is such a nutritious and delicious option for our dogs- instead of throwing the inside of your pumpkin away when you carve it, why not make these? These homemade pumpkin dog treats are easy to make (especially for children!) and they provide a tasty and healthy snack for your furry friend. Let’s get started!
Ingredients:
- 1 cup pumpkin (blended into a smooth consistency – you can also buy pureed pumpkin)
- 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 grated apple
Optional topping:
- Natural peanut butter (nothing added-check ingredients)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a baking sheet with baking paper or foil.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the pumpkin, egg, water, and apple.
- Gradually add the whole wheat flour to the wet ingredients. Mix the dough until it forms a workable consistency. You may need to adjust the amount of flour or water slightly to achieve a non-sticky, smooth dough.
- If you want to add a hint of cinnamon for extra flavour, you can incorporate it into the dough at this point. Cinnamon is safe for most dogs and can provide a delightful aroma.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to your desired thickness. For crunchy treats, aim for about 1/4 inch thickness. If your dog prefers softer treats, keep the dough slightly thicker.
- Use cookie cutters to cut the dough into fun shapes or simply use a knife to create squares or rectangles. Be creative!
- Place the cutouts on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each treat.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the treats turn golden brown and are firm to the touch.
- Remove the treats from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack.
- Once the treats have cooled, it’s time to let your pup enjoy them! Store any extras in an airtight container These homemade pumpkin dog treats are not only easy to make, but they also offer numerous health benefits for your dog. Pumpkin is packed with fibre, vitamins, and minerals, and it can help with digestive health and maintain a shiny coat.
Remember, while these treats are generally safe for most dogs, it’s essential to consult your Vet if your pet has specific dietary restrictions or allergies. Enjoy making these treats, and watch your furry friend savour every bite!
